The Lord of the Rings

Here are some images from the Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring movie. Also, I have included excerpts from the book that are about food that I have also included in my paper.

The images do not directly correlate to the quotes.

Here, Merry and Piping are stealing crops from a farm.

"The tents began to go up. There was a specially large pavillion, so big that the tree that grew in the field was right inside it, and stood proudly near one end, at the head of the chief table. Lanterns were hung on all its branches. More promissing still (to the hobbit's mind): an enormous open-air kitchen was erected in the north corner of the field. A draught of cooks, from every inn and eating-house for miles around, arrived to supplement the dwarves and other odd folk that were quartered at Bag End. Excitements rose to it's height."

Here, Gandalf and Bilbo talk over tea and food.

"And laugh they did, and eat, and drink, often and heartily, being fond of simple jests at all times, and of six meals a day (when they could get them)."

This is Merry and Pippin singing about happy times and beer.

"They began to hum softly, as hobbits have a way of doing as they walk along, especially when they are drawing near to home at night. With hobbits it is a supper-song or a bed-song; but these hobbits hummed a walking-song (though not, of course, without any mention of supper or bed)."

Lemon Sponge Cake from September by Rosamunde Pilcher...
"Once more Isobel drifted back into that illusion of timelessness in which she had been lost before Verena's interruption. She thought again of old Lady Balmerino, who used to sit here, as she and Verena sat, reading a novel or peacfully sewing her tapestry. Everything now as nice as once it had been. Perhaps in a moment there would come a discreet tap on the door and Harris the butler would enter, pushing before him the mahogany trolly laid with the silver teapot and the eggshell china cups, the covered dishes of schones, fresh from the oven, the bowl of cream, the strawberry jam, the lemon sponge-cake, and the dark, sticky gingerbread."
Here, Isobel is remembering a time when having nice things was common. I think that she had at one time been rich and sophisticated, but now she isn't. Reminiscing about her past makes her forget everything that is happening at the moment. All the treat that she wished the butler would bring her were sophisticated treats that made her happy. I don't think of the lemon sponge cake I made to be sophisticated at all. I'm not sure that making the sponge made me understand the text more, it only helped me experience what kinds of things Isobel once ate.
